As baptized believers in Christ, we are all called to holiness. Each of us, no matter our age or state in life, has a share in the mission of the Church. This is made clear in Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, one of the most significant documents promulgated by St. Pope Paul VI and the Second Vatican Council. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to live our lives in union with Him. “All men are called to this union with Christ, who is the light of the world, from whom we go forth, through whom we live, and toward whom our whole life strains.”
Lumen Gentium is translated from Latin as Light of the Nations. In John 8:12, Jesus teaches, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” In addition, in Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands us to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” This is our call and it is universal. It is a call for young and old. It is a call for us all. It is a call to holiness and a call to walk in and to share the light.
The Department of Catholic Schools presents the Lumen Gentium Award to a Catholic school whose school community lives out its mission statement, shows high academic and personal growth, and truly serves as a model of Christ’s light to all nations and all peoples.
