VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR JAIL AND PRISON MINISTRY

The Office of Jail and Prison Ministry serve as a resource for parishes and faithful by providing information and ministry opportunities for clergy and laity in correctional institutions within the borders of the diocese.

The volunteer team of jail and prison ministers work with the incarcerated population throughout The Diocese of Trenton to spread the light and love of our Lord Jesus Christ and the forgiveness and grace of God to those who are in most need of His Mercey.  

What Would Jesus Do if...

He was walking the cell block corridors of a maximum-security prison?

He was sitting in the back of a Breau of Prisons transport van?  

He was awaiting trial in an overcrowded county jail?

We need to look no further than His actions when He was eating with tax collectors (Matthew 9:9-13), how He intervened with the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), his interaction with the woman at the well (John 4:1-26) … the list goes on and on.

As we strive to live a life guided by Christ’s teachings, we humbly call to mind the Corporal Works of Mercey that Jesus laid out and remember His command that we carry our own cross in the service of others.

The institutions in which we serve are in need Priests, Deacons, and members of the Catholic laity to carry out this vital work and ministry.

• Directing pastoral and sacramental ministry to incarcerated men and women. 
• Eucharistic Services, Bible Study, Fellowship Time, 1:1 Mentoring, Counseling, OCIA Instruction, Contemplative prayer and much more.
• Maintain an extensive library of books, articles, payer materials and more for the incarcerated population to learn from and use.
• Work to ensure that time served is used to rehabilitate and restore so that inmates have a better chance of a bright and prosperous life on the outside.
• Educate the parishioners of The Diocese on the nature of incarceration as well as the needs of prisoners, victims of crimes, and their families
• Recruit and train clergy and lay contract and volunteer ministers
• Advocate for the rights of the incarcerated by lobbying with civic and community leaders for a more just and humane correctional system
