March 13, 2024FATHER DANIEL F. GOWEN, WHO SERVED IN MULTIPLE PARISHES THROUGHOUT THE DIOCESE OVER MORE THAN THREE DECADES, died March 9. He was 64.
Funeral services will be held in St. Denis Church, Manasquan, beginning March 14, with visitation 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated March 15 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall Township.

BISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL, C.M., JOINED FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE MOUNT CARMEL GUILD to celebrate all who bring the mission of the diocesan inner-city Trenton agency to life.
On the Fourth Sunday of Lent, the day the Church marked “Rejoice Sunday,” they gathered in Sacred Heart Church, Trenton, for the Guild’s annual Founders’ Day Mass, at which Bishop O’Connell served as principal celebrant and homilist.

OURS AND HOW TO SHARE IT WITH OTHERS” will be the theme of the 2024 diocesan catechist formation day March 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, 61 Georgia Rd., Freehold.
Sponsored by the Annual Catholic Appeal in collaboration with Loyola Press, the conference will feature speaker Julianne Stanz, director of outreach for evangelization and discipleship at Loyola Press and consultant to the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization.
The day will include Mass, lunch, breakout groups and all participants will receive a copy of “The Catechist’s Backpack,” co-authored by Stanz and Joe Paprocki.

FOR MINISTRY LEADERS SEEKING TO GROW THEIR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION BACKGROUND, grant applications for the Bishop John C. Reiss Religious Education Scholarship fund are now available via the diocesan Department of Catechesis.
In memory of Bishop Reiss, eighth Bishop of Trenton, the fund bearing his name provides scholarships to help cover tuition costs for continuing education in religion or theology for those who teach the Catholic faith in the Diocese’s parishes and schools. The scholarship may be applied to a course, conference or seminar through any accredited Catholic college or university, in-person or online. This coursework should be beyond catechist certification or other basic levels of ministry formation (diocesan training).
Applications for 2024 scholarship awards are due by April 15. The criteria for eligibility is listed at dioceseoftrenton.org/ bishop-john-c-reiss-religious-education-scholarship. Awards will be announced in the spring following review of the applications by the Bishop John C. Reiss Scholarship Board.
